In an illustration essay, students make a basic, general point and then illustrate their point with specific examples or evidence. The illustration essay typically follows a basic, five-paragraph structure: Some writers might get more creative with this structure, but they should always include at least three examples to illustrate their point.

In this lesson, you'll find some ideas for topics to get students interested in writing strong illustration essays. Engage students in writing an illustration essay by offering daily life topics that are important to them.

What's something you really love about your school? Make a statement that explains what you think makes your school special. Then, use specific evidence from your daily life in school to show that your point is true. For instance, if you want to argue that your school has dedicated teachers, illustrate this point with evidence that shows exactly how dedicated different teachers are and why this matters.

Describe a topic that you think is very important to kids your age. Maybe it has to do with how much technology you are allowed to use each day, or maybe it has to do with how adults talk to or about you.

State one theory you have about this topic and then use examples throughout your essay to illustrate how your theory bears out in practice. Describe an animal that you've had a meaningful relationship with.

This could be a particular pet, or it could be an animal you have learned a lot about and been influenced by. Make a thesis statement about why this animal matters to you or to the world. The body of your essay should use particular evidence about the animal to illustrate your broader sentiment. Name a person you really admire, and write a statement that encapsulates precisely why you admire this person. This could be somebody famous, or it could be a friend or family member.

The examples you provide should illustrate that what you initially said about your subject is true, so that somebody who doesn't know the person will understand what makes this person special and unique. Imagine that a new family has arrived in your city, town or neighborhood. What do you think they should know first about their new community? As you write your essay, use examples that describe the specific point you're making.
