It all began with a brainstorming meeting that resulted in nearly one hundred possible short answer prompts. The committee then sought feedback, and proceeded to edit, cut, and imagine the breadth of responses these prompts might yield.

We continuously asked ourselves: Are the prompts creative enough? Will applicants enjoy writing the essays? Will our staff be excited to read the essays? Will the essays tell us more about the heart, mind, and spirit of the applicant? Writing short answer prompts can be a daunting task. We want the prompts to evoke thoughtful, creative, and honest responses. The essays should allow the applicant to jump off of the page and tell us who they are, what their hopes are, and what makes them tick.

There is no correct or incorrect answer to any of the questions, and it is wonderful to see various interpretations of the prompts. On behalf of the admissions staff, we hope you are as excited about the prompts as we are. I am excited for the opportunity to share them with you, as well as provide some explanation for each prompt.

Required for all applicants: Notre Dame is an adventure that will develop more than just your intellect. We want to know exactly why Notre Dame is the right fit for your college experience and why you want to be part of the Notre Dame community. Remember that every applicant will answer this question, so consider how you can make yourself stand out from the crowd. If a prompt will shed new light on you as an individual, it is a good prompt to answer.

If an idea immediately comes to mind when you read one of the following prompts, go for it. There is no right or wrong prompt to choose—we are looking forward to reading answers from each! Home is where your story begins. Tell us about your home and how it has influenced your story. This essay will give the reader insight into how unique each applicant is.

But it should show your thought process. Make sure to avoid overly controversial issues, however. You never know who will be reading your essay or what they believe! Notre Dame is a geographically diverse university, and admissions officers are interested in learning about both you and your community.

First, you must answer the following question: For whom are you responsible? What is one thing that you know for a fact? Why are you certain? If you want to write memorable, interesting essays, the key is to be yourself and write in your own voice. With only words to work with, specificity is essential. Use concrete details and avoid generalizations.

Polish your essays to a shine. For this reason, you want to avoid spelling or grammar errors—especially with such a limited word count! Revise and edit, and ask trusted teachers, family members, and friends to weigh in as well. Now for some advice from the university itself: Look into the following: You can even talk about how these classes or opportunities relate to your future plans.

What aspects of their study abroad program excite you? Again, do your research! Remember that you only need to answer two of the following four questions. Which pillar should you choose? Is there a certain subject that you absolutely love to study, even in your free time? Have you used your mind to make a difference in your school or community, perhaps by inventing a solution to a problem?

Are you a compassionate person who volunteers at an animal shelter or a nursing home? Is this an extremely significant part of your life and personality?

Maybe your work with intellectually disabled children in the Special Olympics has inspired your future career choice. What are you passionate about? Do you have any important or special family traditions? Is there someone in your family who has majorly influenced you? Reflect on what you learned about life, hope, and yourself from this experience. You can talk about a specific responsibility task you have, or your responsibility to a group of people, like a club at school, a team, or your family.

Do you work to help your parents pay the bills or buy groceries? Do you pick your younger sibling up from school every day?
